Wishing You Were Here

Description

I drew this for :icondeathnote-club: Valentine’s Day contest.

*FULL VIEW PLEASE*

It’s L and Raito, and below is a short story that goes with it. BEWARE: of angst. If you don’t like that sort of thing you might not want to read it.

BTW: I know I draw feet kind of weird, but that’s just the way I do them…so there suppose to look like that!

Anyway, here’s the story

Raito wasn’t going to show up. He couldn’t. The young detective sitting on the porch knew this more then anyone; but part of him didn’t want to face the truth. That he was the one responsible for taking Raito away in the first place. For when given the choice between love and justice; L had succumb the latter of the two.

At the time his decision had been a palpable one. Not only drawn from his own obligation to the people; but also spun from denial in acknowledging the true feelings he held for the younger boy. After all, L had convinced himself that the attraction between him and Raito was nothing of dire significance. And on several occasions he’d even mused that it was all some sort of ploy for Kira to learn his real name…or at least that’s what he told himself.

But he had been wrong. A mistake that now cost him more grief then joy, as it seemed to manifest immeasurable repercussions.

Taking in a deep breath, the young detective looked out towards the vast fields surrounding the country-style home. Musing how the open, neglected terrain was in many ways symbolic to what his aching heart was constantly being subjected to.

After a few more minutes of silence, L’s dark glossy eyes fell down to the cracked glass bowl, residing by his right foot.

“There’s just one strawberry left Raito-kun…” His words directed to the picture beside him, the one that was never out of arms reach. He may have put Kira behind bars; but he kept anything that reminded him of Raito as close as possible. The shackles that they once shared were also there. Loosely half-hanging over the wooden frame and an apple occupied the space beside it. This was all L needed to remind himself of the one he loved. The one he betrayed. “I think I’ll save it for you…” his raspy voice hummed, as long slender digits twirled the red morsel between their tips.

Releasing another exasperated sigh, dark bangs generously shaded L’s saddened eyes, as the young detective leaned forward slightly, returning the strawberry to its rightful place. Why had he done this? Why was it that Raito was Kira? And why was he, L? For once in his life, why couldn’t he have been selfish? Why hadn’t he taken what he wanted and screw the results? Was it too much to ask for love? L had never been privileged enough to experience the delicate emotion, and now that he had, it hurt like hell.

“I miss you Raito-kun?” The rims of his sepulchral eyes harboring just a small trace salty water. He hated to cry. To show the world just how weak and vulnerable he really was. There was only one person he wanted to be weak in front of and that person had been locked away for three years.

“Raito…”

If he could take it all back, then he would. If he could make the choice again, then it would be a different one.

“Raito-kun, I love you…”

God, the pain was unbearable. Like a knife twisting itself inside his already bleeding heart. Each day the blade was pushed a little deeper, each time it killed him a little more.

Tears that he promised himself he wouldn’t shed; now flowed freely across his pain stricken face. His sobs were muffled, but auditable none the less.

“I love you…” The same notes repeating, breaking through more fluent cries.

“I’m…I’m so sorry…”If only he could say it to Raito’s face. If only he wasn’t such a coward. Instead he had to confess the sins of his tormented heart to a picture –because the very thought of looking at the real Raito was unbearable.

Wiping his tear stained face with the back of his hand, L quietly regained his composure. Long ago he’d considered today to be something special; but without the one he loved, it just mimicked torment.

Absent-mindedly reaching down, his fingers grasped the strawberry once more. With a vague amount of hesitation, L popped the sweet looking fruit into his mouth, grimacing at the taste. It wasn’t that the morsel wasn’t delectable, but rather the fact that L could no longer taste its sweetness.

Drawing to his feet the young man shifted uneasily, taking the picture of his beloved to his chest.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Raito-kun,” L’s voice was swathed in pain; but distinctively harbored a sense of unconditional love.

He would always love Raito, even if it hurt more then it helped.

I like the picture very much, but I'm not happy with one detail in the story... 3 Years?! For all of his murders, each of which was on purpose, he should be there till he dies! Though I understand that this would make the story even more sad than now...
